Vitebsk. Monument to the heroes of the war of 1812.
The monument was erected on the former Assumption Hill on the bank of the Western Bell at the initiative of the Vitebsk Scientific Archive Commission with the funds collected by the residents of the Vitebsk region. The architect is Ivan Famin, a famous Russian architect, architectural historian and teacher, a leading master of the St. Petersburg neoclassical school. The work on the installation of the monument was supervised by the Vitebsk city architect T. Kibardin. The monument is a massive red granite obelisk 26 meters high. The granite was brought from Finland. The obelisk tapers to the top and is crowned with a cast-iron double-headed eagle on a ball, which was cast in an art factory in Petersburg. The obelisk is mounted on a pedestal. A cast-iron board with a text is installed on the monument. At the corner of the monument are four cast-iron cannons, which were cast in the image of the martyrs of the time of Emperor Peter I. The monument had a town-planning significance, because its vertical closed the perspective of Dvartsova Street, modern Sovietka Street. The place here for the monument was not chosen by chance, because the building of the governor's palace, where the emperor Napoleon Bonaparte lived for some time in July 1812, has been preserved.
