The Vitebsk Center of Contemporary Art Museum.

The city of Vitebsk is primarily associated with artists and an art school. In recent years, several museums have been opened in the city, telling about the artistic traditions of the Vitebsk region.

A few years ago, the Vitebsk Center for Contemporary Art Museum was opened on Marc Chagall Street in the center of Vitebsk. The museum operates in an old building in which the Vitebsk National Art School worked in 1918 – 1923.

 The school was founded by Marc Chagall. The museum's exposition tells about the artistic history of Vitebsk in the 19th - 20th centuries, about the creative association UNOVIS, which translates as "The Affirmators of new Art", about the outstanding artists who worked here: Marc Chagall, Kazimir Malevich, El Lisitsky and others.

The art school was opened on the initiative of M. Chagall and was originally located in the mansion of banker Israel Vishnyak. The building was built in 1913 and nationalized after the revolution.

The first director of the art school was the famous artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, who taught composition, portrait painting and drawing from nature. The poster workshop was taught by avant-garde artist Ivan Puni. The workshop of modern applied art was organized by Ksenia Boguslavskaya. Sculpture workshop - Ivan Tilberg. Marc Chagall organized the "free workshop". Kazimir Malevich gave lectures and made reports.

But the heyday of the art school lasted only a couple of years. Then the art school was moved to another building in the city center on Suvorov Street.

The exposition of the modern museum presents sculpture, graphics, photographs by contemporary authors. It tells about the artistic traditions of Vitebsk and about modern art trends.
