Description

The Three Bayonets Memorial in Vitebsk is a large memorial complex of the city dedicated to the memory of soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War and gave their lives for the liberation of the city. It was opened in 1974 and has become a symbol of the courage and heroism of the defenders of the city.

A large memorial complex of the city dedicated to the memory of soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War and gave their lives for the liberation of the city.

The memorial consists of three bayonet monuments with a height of 56 meters, tapering upwards, which symbolize the three main directions of protection of the city. They are made of concrete and granite, which emphasizes strength and durability. The obelisks are united by a granite belt, on each side of which are reliefs dedicated to Belarusian soldiers, partisans, and underground heroes who fought for victory. An eternal flame burns at the base of the composition in memory of them. From the inside, the stone bayonets are connected by a ring on which it is written: "Glory to the heroes." The stone pylons list the years during which the war lasted.

In the early 90s, the composition of the complex was supplemented with sculptures depicting Soviet soldiers and peaceful citizens. In 2009-2010, the memorial complex "Three Bayonets" was restored, as well as the reconstruction of the surrounding area. 

The memorial is located in the central part of Vitebsk on the banks of the Western Dvina River, which makes it accessible to residents and tourists. The memorial impresses with its grandeur and monumentality, granite bayonets look very formidable and powerful. The memorial is surrounded by greenery and landscaped grounds, which creates an atmosphere of respect and remembrance. On the reverse side of the monument there is a staircase leading to the river, which offers a picturesque view of the left-bank part of the city.

The Three Bayonets Memorial serves as a venue for commemorative events, rallies and flower-laying in honor of the dead. He recalls the importance of preserving historical memory and respect for the feat of ancestors.

Vitebsk became the scene of fierce fighting during the war and many soldiers gave their lives for the liberation of the city. The memorial was created to perpetuate their memory and remind future generations of the value of peace and freedom.
