An ancient Orthodox church, a monument of architecture of the Russian style.
The church was built in 1865 with the blessing of Metropolitan Joseph Semashko. It was built thanks to the active participation of the Vilna Governor-General Mikhail Muravyov and the leader of the Vileika nobility Konstantin Snitko, according to the project of engineer Alexey Polozov. Funds for the construction of the church of St. Mary of Egypt in Vileika were donated by the nobleman Apollo Redkin, who, while living in St. Petersburg, provided 11,500 rubles in silver on the condition that the temple be named after this great shrine of the Orthodox Church.
The consecration of the church took place on August 22, 1865, by His Grace Alexander, Bishop of Kovno. The first rector was the priest Illarion Vyrzhikovsky, and the icons for the iconostasis were executed by Professor Mikhail Vasilyevich Vasiliev, famous for historical painting.
The construction of the temple is associated with Apollo Redkin, as well as with Mikhail Muravyov, who suppressed the January uprising. Redkin, who previously held the post of vice-governor of Orel, was a man of a kind heart and, addressing Muravyov, blessed the construction of the temple to honor the memory of the dead.
The church, built in the Russian Byzantine style, could accommodate 450 believers and was painted by a famous artist, and an interesting and distinctive feature of it was the tower clock, collected from donations from parishioners.
Vileichans call this temple the Mariinsky Church. During its existence for more than 150 years, the temple has not been closed and prayer has not stopped here for a single day. Even in the Soviet years, during the persecution, the temple remained active.
In 2015, during the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the church, a Spiritual and educational center was opened at the temple. In 2017, sacristy was added to the back of the building on the sides.
Today it is a temple with beautiful architecture. The interior is very beautiful, cozy and peaceful. There are many icons with soulful images, including St. Mary of Egypt herself. Well-maintained territory near the temple.
This spiritual and historical place should definitely be visited while in Vileika.
