Vaverka. Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord

The place with the interesting name Vaverka (in belarussian means Squirrel) arose in the 15th century and at the same time the first wooden Catholic church was built. The first church was consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity. The owners of the place were various noble families, first Galginovich, then Yundilovich, Kostevich, Galevskys. The church was a Calvinist church for a while, and then it passed back to the Catholics.

The first stone church was built in 1844 on the site of a wooden church, which has since fallen into disrepair. The building was built with the money of the famous local nobleman Samuel Kostrovitsky. The church was consecrated in honor of St. Francis of Rome. During the anti-Russian uprising of 1863, the parishioners of the local church took an active part, and Ksenz Raymond Ziamatsky was executed in Vilna by order of Count Muravyov.

During the First World War, the church was looted and severely damaged. During the Polish period, the shrine was restored and significantly expanded and rebuilt under the guidance of the Vilna architect. The church received a new name and was consecrated in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The solemn consecration took place in November 1928. And at the same time, the construction continued further and in 1929 new choirs were erected. Two towers were completed by 1932. The organ in the choirs was installed in 1936.

In Soviet times, the church worked even when there was no priest.

The stone church has a Latin cross in the plan. The length of the temple is 41 meters, and the width is about 20 meters. The height of the two towers reaches 44 meters. The church has 3 naves. The main facade is flanked by 2 multi-tiered bell towers. There are 4 altars in the interior: 1 stone and 3 carved wooden ones. The territory of the church is fenced with a rubble stone fence.
