Description

The history of St. Nicholas Church in the village of Urechye in the Lyuban district dates back to the early 18th century, when it was first mentioned in historical documents. In the middle of the 18th century, the temple was under the control of the Jesuits for some time, but later it was transferred back to the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church.
Throughout its history, the church has been repeatedly destroyed and reborn.

Currently, the church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is a brick building, plastered and whitewashed. The architectural appearance of the current temple includes a rectangular prayer hall topped with a hipped roof, which is flanked by a three-tiered bell tower (octagon on two fours). The bell tower tent and the central part of the roof are decorated with onion-shaped heads. The flat facades of the church are decorated with rectangular window and door openings, giving the building rigor and conciseness.

Urechye. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The exact date of the construction of the first St. Nicholas Church in the town of Urechye could not be established. However, it is known that in 1740, a new wooden church with three domes was built at the expense of parishioners. The inventory of the Minsk Ecclesiastical Consistory for 1788 mentions a fire that completely destroyed this church. At that time, the rector was Priest Jeremiah Dashkevich.

In the period from 1934 to 1936, the church was dismantled by Komsomol activists, which led to the loss of another significant spiritual building. However, in December 1951, a building was purchased for the construction of a new church. On December 19, 1951, the feast day of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop Pitirim of Minsk and Belarus blessed the consecration of the prayer house. An All-night Vigil and Divine Liturgy were held on the same day.

The church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker houses an icon of the Augustinian Virgin, associated with an important historical event. Locals say that during the First World War our soldiers found themselves in a dense environment and did not know how to escape. At this critical moment, the Mother of God appeared before them, pointing the way to salvation, which consolidated in the minds of people the faith in her miraculous intercession.
