An unusual monument of industrial architecture is located on the banks of the Ditva River, far from residential buildings, behind a bridge. The mill is built of rubble stone, an unusual solution for Belarus. Previously, the building was topped with a wooden roof and blades, but in the 1990s they burned down during a fire. To preserve the building, the roof was covered with a tin dome. Today, this rugged stone structure attracts travelers with its architectural uniqueness and secluded location on a picturesque shore.

Ghost on the Ditva river: the story of the Tarnovo windmill
There are not many monuments of industrial architecture of the 19th – early 20th century preserved in Belarus, which could boast not only of venerable age, but also of unusual architectural appearance. One of these silent giants got lost in the picturesque corners of Lida district - on the banks of the Ditva River, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, in the agricultural town of Tarnovo.
If you decide to find this mill, the bridge over the river will serve as a landmark. It is located away from the main residential development, like a hermit who has decided to live out his life alone with water and wind. Today, this building is a sad but majestic monument to a bygone era, preserving echoes of history within its walls.
A stone giant made of rubble stone.
The first thing that catches your eye when looking at this building is its architectural incongruity for a traditional Belarusian windmill. Unlike the wooden "pillars" or "tents" mostly used to, Tarnovo mill is made of rubble stone.
This is a massive, solid structure, which was conceived not just as a mechanism for grinding grain, but as a durable structure capable of surviving more than one generation of owners. The rough-hewn stone masonry gives the building a harsh, medieval charm. Surrounded by green meadows and the waters of the Ditva River, this stone cylinder looks somewhat alien, which makes it a favorite object for photographers and seekers of unusual locations.
Lost wooden lace.
Unfortunately, the building has survived to this day in a modified form. Previously, the mill was an integral part of the local landscape, not only because of the stone "barrel", but also because of the wooden structures. The powerful wooden blades, rotating under the pressure of the wind, and the pointed wooden roof created the classic silhouette that we used to see in old European engravings.
Fate has dealt cruelly. In the 1990s, during a turbulent time for the country, a fire broke out at the mill. The fire did not spare the wooden elements: the roof and blades burned almost to the ground. The mill lost its "face" and functionality, turning into a hollow stone cylinder.
The tin dome as a symbol of preservation.
However, this story has a sequel. Local residents and, probably, caring representatives of the village council did not allow the unique building to completely collapse. In order to protect the interior floors and walls from rain and snow, which are detrimental to the historical masonry, it was decided to preserve it.
Instead of the lost wooden roof, the mill was covered with a tin dome. This decision was purely utilitarian, aimed at preserving the stone foundation. On the one hand, the metal roof saved the building from final collapse. On the other hand, it gave the mill a slightly industrial, but still recognizable and even concise look. Today, this is the only reminder that work used to be in full swing here: millstones hummed, gears creaked, and the wind filled the sails of the blades with energy.
How to get there and what to see.
The mill is located on the territory of the Tarnovo village Council of the Lida district of the Grodno region. This place is ideal for those who like to travel slowly through the Belarusian countryside.
You can get here both from Lida and from Mosty. The landmark is the bridge over the river Ditva. Being away from the residential sector, the mill gives an amazing feeling of privacy. It's worth staying here to:
· Inspect the unique rubble masonry of an industrial building in Belarus;
· Walk along the banks of the river Ditva;
· Imagine how this structure looked before the fire of the 1990s, when an octagonal wooden tent covering with powerful wings towered over the stone base.
Tarnovo mill is not just a tourist attraction. This is an engineering monument that has survived ups and downs, fire and oblivion, but has survived. It continues to stand on the shore, reminding us that even in the age of digital technology, there is a special romance in the creaking of old machinery and the rustle of the wind against stone walls.
