Description

There are a lot of architectural and ancient monuments in the ancient town of Smolyany in the Orsha district. After a walk through the historical center, you should come to the outskirts of Smolyany to the old cemetery, where the famous Belarusian and Polish poet, writer and public figure Tamash Zahn is buried (1796-1855), who was a friend of the brilliant poet Adam Mickiewicz.

Tamash Zahn lived with his family on his estate near Smolyany, and after his death was buried in the local cemetery. In the 19th century, the famous artist and composer Napoleon Orda visited Smolyany, who left an image of Zahn's grave.
The graves of T. Zahn and his relatives have been preserved to this day.

Smolyany. Grave of Tamash Zahn.

     The famous Belarusian poet and public figure Tamash Zahn (1796-1855) is buried in an ancient cemetery on the outskirts of Smolyany. A friend of A. Mickiewicz, J. Chechot and I. Domeyko.


      T. Zahn was born in Molodechno district. He studied in Minsk at the men's gymnasium, where he became friends with the Vereshchaka brothers. Through the brothers, he met their sister Marylya Vereshchaka. Then T. Zahn introduced Maryla to his friend the poet Adam Mickiewicz, who became the lover of the brilliant poet.


      He is studying at Vilnius University. He participated in the creation of secret student circles of philomaths and philarets, engaged in educational and educational activities. In 1823, he was arrested and then exiled by the tsarist authorities to the Urals.


     In exile, Zahn is engaged in geology and botany. During the expeditions he found copper ore, gold and oil. A museum of minerals was created in the city of Orenburg. After the amnesty, he works in St. Petersburg as a librarian at the Mining Institute. Then he returns to Belarus. He works in the Lepel region and the Orsha region, and lives in the Molodechno region and the Grodno region. In 1846, he married and acquired the Kakhachin estate near Smolyany. Zahn and his wife Brigitte have four sons.


       T. Zahn died in the summer of 1855, and was buried in Smolyany at the local Catholic cemetery. The grave has been preserved in good condition to our time. The grave is located in the center of the cemetery on the hill. You need comfortable shoes to get to it.
