Slutsk. St. Michael's Cathedral
The Church of Constantinople was the name of the modern building of St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The church was erected on Kopylskaya Street and dedicated to Prince Konstantin and Tsaritsa Alyona. This building was made of wood, being at the same time a remarkable example of Baroque architecture, which to this day attracts the attention of historians and art historians with its unique appearance and harmony of forms.
However, the church did not last long in part of the Old Town, and already in the middle of the 18th century it was moved closer to the equally famous, but unfortunately not preserved to this day, St. Michael's Church. In 1798, the Church of Constantinople finally received a new name – St. Michael the Archangel, which marked the beginning of a new milestone in its history.
In 1812, the temple suffered serious damage from the Napoleonic army, which looted and carried off about half of the church shrines. Fortunately, the church quickly regained its strength and former strength.
Until the end of the 19th century, there was a wooden bell tower attached to the church, which was eventually destroyed by the winds. Instead, in 1880, a new three-tiered one was built, made in harmony with the general concept of the church building. This gave the whole composition a pseudo-Russian style look that was popular at the time, and it is precisely this look that the temple has preserved to this day. The renaming of the cathedral took place already in the 1990s.
The basis of the temple's composition consists of three log cabins with a voluminous completion. They are surrounded by a small gallery that opens towards the middle log house. Despite the absence of ornate decorative details, this example of wooden architecture impresses with its rigor and solemnity.
