Description

The Museum of the History of the Slutsk Belts preserves the great national heritage and represents an outstanding example of decorative and applied art - the famous Slutsk belts. These unique belts have become not only a historical cultural symbol, but also a modern brand of Belarus. They were an important element of the men's wardrobe, symbolizing the material wealth and high status of their owner.

The Slutsk belts are recognized as the hallmark of Belarus and are considered a symbol of the country, which is known all over the world. Belts created on the territory of the then Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were sent to various parts of the world, demonstrating Belarusian craftsmanship. However, most of the belts in the museum are represented only by copies. Despite this, the exposition allows you to preserve the memory of the past heritage.

Slutsk. Museum of the Slutsk Belts

Slutsk belts began to be woven on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1758. The most famous manufactory was located in Slutsk. The training of weavers took at least seven years, which indicates the high complexity and skill of this craft. Slutsk belts were made of fine silk, gold and silver threads. Their length ranged from 2 to 4.5 meters, and their width from 30 to 50 centimeters.

The Slutsky belt was an important element of the men's costume of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, symbolizing the noble origin and material wealth of the owner.

In the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Slutsk belts became a collector's item. They are collected by museums and private collectors, studying them as products of artistic weaving.

The weaving technologies used in the production of Slutsk belts were considered lost for a long time. However, in 2014, machine manufacturing of copies of these belts began in the city of Slutsk.

The Museum of the History of the Slutsk Belts consists of several exhibitions:
