Slavgorod. Church of the Nativity of the Virgin

In the very center of the small town of Slavgorod stands the Orthodox church of the 18th century Nativity of the Virgin. If you drive from Mogilev along the main street of the city, you will arrive immediately at the church.

After the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the end of the 18th century, Slavgorod, which at that time was called Propoisk, passed to Prince Golitsyn. The prince built a palace on Castle Hill and a little further in the village on a hill, the stone church of the Nativity of the Virgin.

The temple was built in 1791 – 1793 at the Foundation of Prince Alexei Mikhailovich Golitsyn. The building was built in the classical style. A multi–tiered bell tower and a parochial school building were built separately.

The interior of the church is decorated with partially preserved frescoes. Initially, there were 57 plots. Some sources mention that the famous architect Nikolai Lvov and the artist Vladimir Borovikovsky took part in the construction of the church. In pre-revolutionary times, representatives of the local aristocracy, including Prince Kropotkin, were buried near the temple.

The church building is centric without an apse with an 8-sided dome. The interiors were decorated with frescoes, but in Soviet times some of the paintings were lost.

At the entrance to the church on the right side, the 18th-century building of the former parish school has been preserved. A priest lives here now. And in front of the main facade of the church there is a two-tiered bell tower.

The church has been restored and is operational. If you come to see the church, but the temple is closed, then go to the priest's house and ask for permission to see the architectural monument.
