Skidel. Chapel of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary
On the Grodno-Lida highway there is a small town of Skidel, which has been known since the 15th century. In ancient times, the place was famous for its Chetvertinsky estate with a large park and a family chapel in the Neo-Gothic style.
This small Catholic church will not be so easy to find. It is located on the outskirts of the town among an ancient park.
The Chapel of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary was built in 1870 and was the ancestral church of the Chetvertinskys until 1939, before the annexation of Western Belarus to the USSR.
After the war, the church was closed and housed a driver's course and for a while there was a military commissariat. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Catholic church was returned to the faithful. Restoration was carried out. The temple is not always open, but, as a rule, on weekends. Therefore, if you want to visit the temple, you must call the priest in advance.
The chapel is a monument of Neo-Gothic architecture. In terms of the building has a quadrangular volume, which is elevated to a high ground floor. Two multi-tiered round bell towers have been built on the sides of the main facade. There is a triangular pediment between the towers. In front of the main facade there is a terrace with 13 steps. A five-sided apse is attached to the main volume. The interior of the Catholic church is covered with pointed cross vaults.
