The memorial complex "Shimki" was created in honor of the liberator soldiers, partisans and residents of the Mostovsky district who died during the Great Patriotic War.
During the Great Patriotic War, more than four thousand residents of the Mosty district fought against the Nazi invaders on the fronts and in partisan detachments. Nine hundred and fifty–eight people died on the fronts, and one hundred and fourteen died in the guerrilla struggle. In the period from 1941 to 1944, the Nazi punishers killed 2,681 civilians in the area, looted sixteen collective farms, burned down thirteen villages and 806 peasant houses. In the fall of 1942, the Nazis razed the villages of Boyary, Zadvorye, Shchara and Shimki, killing 583 residents.
Soldiers of the 64th Infantry Division of the 49th Army, the 323rd and 348th Infantry divisions of the 3rd Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front, as well as partisan detachments operating in Lipichanskaya Pushcha took part in the liberation of the area from German troops in July 1944.
The memorial complex in memory of the liberator soldiers, partisans and civilians who fell at the hands of the Nazis was erected in 1981-1983. The architectural composition of the memorial is deployed on the banks of the Neman River using picturesque asymmetry.
The main element of the monument is a horizontal concrete stele with an asymmetrically mounted obelisk. The stele, located in the depths of the complex, logically completes the cascade of fifteen concrete blocks on the sides of the platforms. The main stele depicts civilians, and to the left of the obelisk there are three bas–reliefs with soldiers and a partisan. In front of the stele there is a concrete block with beveled edges containing the names of the dead, and in front of the obelisk there is a gray concrete block with information about the losses of the area in the war.
