Description

Until 2021, this attractive church was dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky. Then it was closed for major repairs to update and improve its appearance and interior. Upon completion of the renovation work, the church was re-consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which gave it a new spiritual meaning.

This small one-story church looks very festive and elegant due to its blue-white-blue decoration. The modest blue dome on the drum perfectly combines with the soaring tent bell tower, creating a harmonious architectural ensemble. The white-painted brick walls of the church are decorated with blue window frames.

Rogachev. Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In the 16th century, simultaneously with the construction of Rogachev Castle by decree of Queen Bona, the Church of Cosmas and Damian was erected. Over time, it fell into disrepair, and during the period of Russification, the local authorities decided to build a new church in its place, dedicated to the blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was founded in Rogachev in 1886. This majestic five-domed building was built in the pseudo-Byzantine style and became an important religious center of the region. The church was erected by order of the authorities to strengthen Orthodoxy in the area, as after the abolition of serfdom in 1861, many peasants began to express dissatisfaction and sought the Catholic West.

The church was distinguished by its magnificent decoration and excellent acoustics, but in 1937 it was closed, and the building began to be used for storing salt. During the war, the temple was completely destroyed.

In 1943, parishioners built a small wooden church on the site of the old shrine. However, in 1944, during the retreat, the Germans burned down the temple.

In the 1950s, the Orthodox community bought a house on Sannikov Street (formerly Kolkhoznaya Street). Initially, services were held in this house, and later, by 1983, a stone church was built on its basis, where services continue to this day. In the 1990s, the church also had a bell tower.

In 2021, the church was closed for major repairs to update and improve its exterior and interior. Upon completion of the renovation work in 2022, the church was rededicated in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The temple is located on the outskirts of Rogachev in a quiet and peaceful area. It is not always open to the public, so before visiting it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the schedule of services.
