Description
The Red Bridge, located in the city of Polotsk on the Polota River, is one of the main attractions of this wonderful city. The bridge got its name in memory of the war of 1812. After the battle, this bridge literally turned red from the spilled blood. In honor of the victory of the Russian troops, a memorial plaque with an appropriate inscription was installed next to the Red Bridge, and since then the bridge has been called "Red".
At the beginning of the 20th century, the bridge was made of wood and performed its main functions. However, in 1944, during the war, Polotsk turned into ruins, and, of course, this also affected the bridge. Thanks to the efforts of the townspeople, Polotsk was gradually restored, and the bridge was rebuilt along with it.

Polotsk. The Red Bridge
In Slavic culture, the word "red" often means "beautiful". However, the Red Bridge over the Polota River did not get its name because of its beauty. It got its name after the events of the Patriotic War of 1812, when during the fierce battles the bridge was stained with blood. A bloody battle between Russian and French soldiers took place in mid-October and led to numerous casualties on both sides.
In the 70s of the XX century, the wooden structure of the bridge was replaced by reinforced concrete. At the same time, all design elements have been carefully preserved. A memorial sign was erected at the entrance to the bridge, which says that Russian soldiers entered Polotsk through this bridge and drove out enemy troops from there. Since that time, the liberation of the Belarusian land from French soldiers under the leadership of Napoleon began.
The construction of the new bridge has significantly changed the appearance of Polotsk. The Red Bridge became not just a monument, but also contributed to the creation of a new road. This road has become wider, and the former stone pavement has been replaced with a modern asphalt surface. Thanks to this, communication between the outskirts of the city and its center has significantly improved.
Currently, the Red Bridge lives its peaceful daily life. If you are planning a vacation in Belarus, be sure to visit the Red Bridge and immerse yourself in the history of the Patriotic War of 1812. This visit will be an unforgettable journey into the past.
