Polotsk. The Cathedral of the Epiphany.
The cross-domed church with an altar apse is crowned with an octagonal light drum with a helmet-shaped roof. Two towers on the edges of the main facade are made in the style of the Vilna Baroque. The roofs of the cathedral are gilded, small onion domes with crosses are installed on them and on the central dome. The tall windows are separated by pilasters, and a carved door with bas-reliefs of archangels leads inside.
In 1582, King Stefan Batory by decree allocated an area in the center of Polotsk for the construction of a church and monastery, exempting them from paying city taxes. After the conclusion of the Brest Church Union in 1596, the monastery, at which the fraternal school was founded, became a stronghold of the Orthodox population opposed to the imposition of uniatism.
In the 1970s, the building was used as a residential building, and now it houses the Simeon Polotsky Museum-Library and the Museum of Printing. After the First World War, the Epiphany Cathedral was closed and converted into a sports hall. Since 1981, the temple building has housed an art gallery. In 1991, the cathedral was reopened for worship and is now the cathedral of the Diocese of Polotsk and Glubokoe.
