The monument "Polotsk – the cradle of the Belarusian statehood" is a symbol of the historical significance of Polotsk.
The composition of the monument "Polotsk – the cradle of Belarusian statehood" is a bundle of shields depicting the faces of famous historical figures such as the legendary Prince Rogvolod of Polotsk and his daughter Rogneda, as well as Vseslav the Magician and Euphrosyne of Polotsk. The reverse side of the shields depicts the key moments of the formation of the Belarusian statehood.
The image of the monument is ambiguous, everyone can interpret it in their own way and everyone can understand it in their own way. Some see it as a bowl or a crescent moon, others as a cradle symbolizing the beginning of a life journey, or a boat sailing along the river of eternity from the past to the future.
1.7 tons of bronze were used to create the sculptural composition. The total weight of the memorial sign is 8 tons with a height of more than 5 meters.
The grand opening of the monument took place on September 2, 2017 as part of the celebration of the Day of Belarusian Writing, which underlines its cultural and historical significance for Belarus.
