Description
Ostrovets is a small regional town that has become very famous in Belarus in recent years due to the construction of a nuclear power plant. Large investments have been made in the town. Entire modern quarters have been built for power engineers. But the town has a 500-year history and there are several interesting architectural monuments worth visiting.
If you go to Ostrovets from the direction of Ashmyany, then at the beginning of the town, on the right side, on the hill, you will see a brick building that looks very much like a castle or other defensive structure. This is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, built in the early 20th century in the neo-Romanesque style. The church is active.

Ostrovets. Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
In Ostrovets, two beautiful old churches from different eras and very different in architecture have been preserved. These are the Church of Cosmas and Damian from the 18th century in the classical style, and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in the neo-Romanesque style.
The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was built on the outskirts of Ostrovets at the beginning of the 20th century, in 1911. The temple was built with money from parishioners. The building was built next to the old Catholic cemetery. It was built in the neo-Romanesque style with elements of Gothic. During the Soviet era, it was closed and converted into a warehouse.
The building is a three-aisled basilica with a two-tower façade. The main volume of the temple is completed by a pentagonal apse. Stepped buttresses are attached along the perimeter of the church. In the interior, there are choirs above the entrance. A Gothic rose is located above the portal of the main façade.
Across the street from the building is an old Catholic cemetery. The area around the church is landscaped, there is a parking lot. The temple is active.
