The Transfiguration Church in Ostrino is an architectural monument in the retrospective Russian style with features of classicism.
It is generally believed that the Transfiguration Church was built in 1865, but other dates are found in archival documents, which makes the question of the time of its construction unclear.
The architectural appearance of the church is typical of Orthodox churches of that time and combines elements of the retrospective Russian style and classicism. The exterior of the building is decorated with pilasters located around the perimeter, which gives it a majestic and solemn appearance. One of the most notable architectural elements of the Transfiguration Church is the stepped roof, which sets the church apart from other structures.
The church has a cross shape, which is formed by the central cuboid volume of the prayer hall, side chapels, a semicircular apse and a bell-tower vestibule. The middle cross is completed with an octagonal tent with a crease and an onion head, and a three-tiered four-tiered bell tower with a tent and a crown serves as the vertical dominant. The main entrance to the temple is decorated with an arched portal-narthex, which is located in the first tier under a gable roof.
The contrasting appearance of the church is emphasized by the polychrome rubble masonry of the walls, against which the plastered and whitewashed elements of the architectural decor stand out, such as corner blades, friezes and planar platbands of arched window openings.
The interior of the Transfiguration Church also deserves attention. The space of the central hall is decorated with a closed pyramidal vault, and the apse, aisles and refectory open with wide arches. A four-tiered carved iconostasis separates the apse from the main hall, giving the interior a special expressiveness and richness.
The Transfiguration Church in Ostrino is not only an architectural monument, but also an important cultural object reflecting the historical and artistic traditions of its time.
