Oshmyany. Synagogue.
When we travel, we always look for something beautiful and unique, something that can surprise us. In Ashmyany you will have such an opportunity. If you visit the center of Ashmyany, you will have a unique opportunity to visit temples of three confessions at once: a Catholic church, an Orthodox church and a Jewish synagogue. All three temples are built around the former market square, now the square of September 17.
The synagogue was built a little further from the road, right behind the building of the local history museum. The exact time of construction of the Jewish temple is unknown, but researchers believe that it was the end of the 19th century. The Oshmyany synagogue is unique in that it has preserved its ancient interior and paintings. At one time, there were quite a few such synagogues in Belarus, but only a few have survived to this day.
The synagogue is built in the classical style with neo-Gothic elements from red brick. The facades of the building are decorated with pilasters. The main volume of the building is covered with a three-level hipped roof. The interior is decorated with colorful frescoes: the signs of the zodiac, the sun and an inscription in Hebrew are depicted nearby. Above the entrance to the synagogue is a neo-Gothic rose.
During the Nazi occupation, the Nazis built a ghetto here. After the war, the building housed a warehouse during the Soviet era. In recent years, the synagogue has been handed over to the regional museum of local history; you can visit the building after paying.
