Oshmyany. Church of Archangel Michael.
In the district center of Oshmyany, on the former market square (now the square of 17th September), located in the very center of this small town, three temples of three confessions have survived to this day: a Catholic church, a church and a synagogue. The Church of Archangel Michael dominates the historical center, and is still the tallest building in the city.
The church was built on the site of a former Catholic church in 1906. Construction of the temple began in 1899 according to the design of the famous Belarusian and Lithuanian architect Vaclav Mikhnevich (1866-1947). The church building is made of brick and stone. Above the entrance to the temple is an inscription in Latin "TE DEUM LAUDAMUS", which translates as "To You, God, we praise" - these are words from an ancient Christian hymn.
During the Soviet era, after the war, the church was closed and turned into a factory. In 1989, the temple was returned to the Catholic faithful.
The church is built in the neo-baroque style. And closer to the "Vilnius" baroque, late Belarusian baroque, as evidenced by the steep, graceful, multi-tiered and openwork towers of the church. The building is three-nave, two-tower, with a pentagonal apse. The central volume of the building is covered with a gable roof.
After visiting the church, you can visit the Orthodox church and the local history museum with a synagogue, which are located literally across the road.
