Orsha is one of the oldest cities in Belarus with many historical and architectural monuments. But not all monuments have survived to our time. And in order to get acquainted with the centuries-old history of the city, we should visit the Museum of History and Culture of the city of Orsha, which is located in the historical center opposite the Jesuit college. Orsha. Museum of history and culture of the city.
The Orshan Museum of History and Culture is located in an ancient building built at the end of the 19th century next to the former Jesuit monastery. The museum was founded in 1989 and opened to visitors in 1992. The main exposition of the museum is located in 4 halls. The archaeological exhibition tells about finds from the city of Vorsha, as well as the surrounding area. Products made of glass, ceramics, bones and precious metals are presented here. There are exhibits that tell about ancient temples and monasteries, about the activities of the Kutein printing house in the 17th century, when Orsha was one of the largest centers of Cyrillic printing in the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. You will see old prints and a numismatic collection. The museum has a lot of information about the life of Orsha during the Russian Empire and the USSR.
In 1998, a mock-up of the 12th century epigraphic monument, the so-called Rogvolod Stone, was installed in the courtyard of the museum. According to the researchers, the stone was located near the village of Diatlovo, Orshan district. And in 1171, an inscription, a six-pointed cross with monograms was carved on this stone by the order of Prince Rogvolod Borisovich of Drutka, grandson of Vseslav Charodei. The inscription was in the Church Slavonic language: "In the summer of 6679 of the month of May, on the 7th day, this cross was laid. Lord, help your servant Vasiliy to baptize the son of Borisov in the name of Rogvolod".
The size of the stone was 3 by 2 and a half meters and weighed 24 tons. Unfortunately, the Rogvolod Stone was blown up in 1934 during the construction of the Minsk-Moscow road.
