Description
On the right bank of the river Orshitsa, among the dense buildings of Orsha, there are the ruins of the Basilian Uniate monastery. At that time it was a flourishing and beautiful architectural ensemble. But over time, the temple was destroyed and the monastery building fell into disrepair. The two-story brick monastery still impresses with its size and scale.

Orsha. Basilian monastery.
If you were in the city of Orsha in the 17th and 18th centuries, you would have seen that half of the city's area was occupied by religious buildings and monasteries. The city was multi-confessional and mainly Orthodox, Catholics and Uniats lived here. And each denomination sought to build its own beautiful and large-scale church.
The Basilian Monastery was founded in 1642 by the Uniate Metropolitan Antony Seliav, and the first buildings were made of wood. In the middle of the 18th century, brick buildings were erected in the late Baroque style, including the Uniat Church in the name of the Intercession of the Mother of God. The monastery was surrounded by a brick wall.
After the suppression of the anti-Russian uprising in our lands in 1832, the Basilian monastery was handed over to Orthodox believers - the men's Pokrovsky monastery. The church was rebuilt in the style of classicism, and a theological school was opened in the premises of the monastery. In Soviet times, in the 1930s, the architectural complex was transferred to a museum. After the war in the 1960s, the church was demolished, and the monastery building was used for living quarters.
The church was built in the late Baroque style and consisted of a 3-nave cross-shaped basilica with a two-towered facade. The foundations of the church have been preserved and it will be possible to restore it in the future.
Monastery residential building G-similar building in plan. An architectural monument of republican significance. A few years ago, a small wooden church was built next to the monastery.
