Odelsk. Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
In the Grodno region, on the border with Poland, there is a small town of Odelsk, where the ancient wooden Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built. The name of the place comes from the small river Odla, which flows into the Svisloch River. Odelsk has been known since the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since the 15th century, as a place on the old trade route from Brest to Grodno.
The first Catholic church was built in 1490. The church was wooden, consecrated in honor of the Ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Catholic shrine was funded by King Casimir. The temple was built in the shape of a cross and had one tower.
In 1546, Queen Bona Sforza granted the town privileges to hold fairs and partially exempted it from taxes. The privileges were significantly expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries by Stefan Batory and Vladislav Vaza. In 1660, King Sigismund Vaza granted permission for the construction of a church in the town and annexed Odelsk to the royal estates. The church was consecrated in honor of the Most Pure Mother of God. A synagogue was built in the 18th century. After the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the place was part of Prussia.
The new Catholic church was built in the 18th century. In 1781, there were more than 4,000 parishioners. The parish included several other nearby towns.
In 1898, the church was renovated. The monument was built in the Baroque style. It is a three-nave basilica with a transept and a pentagonal apse. There are several altars. There is a stone bell tower in front of the church.
