Novogrudok. Railway station and bus station.
The ancient city of Novogrudok, which is the first capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, has a lot of architectural and ancient monuments. The buildings that were erected during the Polish state of 1921-1939, when Novogrudok was the center of the voivodeship, are also interesting objects.
There is a bus station and a former railway station building in the city center along Adam Mickiewicz Street. You will be surprised where the railway comes from in the city. But here is an interesting story connected with this building.
During the First World War, when western Belarus and Novogrudok were under German occupation, the Germans built a narrow–gauge railway 70 kilometers from the Novoelnya station leading from the Baranovichi-Lida line in 1916. The road was laid through Novogrudok to the town of Lyubcha, in the Novogrudok district. The Germans built this railway for military purposes.
After the Peace of Riga in 1921, Novogrudok became part of the Polish state and became the city center of the voivodeship. In the 1920s, the building of the railway station was built of brick in the Zakopane style. There were even plans to expand the railway line from Novogrudok all the way to Oshmyany.
After the Great Patriotic War, the railway was restored and used to transport passengers and cargo. With the development of road transport, the importance of the local railway has significantly decreased, and it has become impractical to use it. In 1965, the railway was dismantled. And the building of the railway station was adapted as a bus station.
