Description
The oldest shopping malls in Belarus are located in Nesvizh, and this is not just a historical fact, but the key to understanding the city. Built around 1596, they became an integral part of the country's first architectural ensemble, combining administrative power and trade.
It all started in 1586, when Nesvizh received Magdeburg rights. A town hall was erected on the Market Square, and two buildings of trade shops were symmetrically located on the sides of it. Later, in the middle of the 18th century, the rows were rebuilt and closed from the back, forming the letter "U".
The courtyard was used for unloading goods, and outside, under the arches, there were numerous shops. The rows themselves were repeatedly burned and rebuilt, but they always remained the center of gravity. Today it is not just a restored Renaissance and Baroque monument. Unlike many museum sites, they have retained their function: shops and souvenir shops are still located here.

Nesvizh. Shopping malls: the heart of urban life.
The oldest shopping malls in Belarus are located in Nesvizh, and this is not just a historical fact. Together with the town hall, they form a unique architectural ensemble, the likes of which are extremely few in Europe.
This is the true heart of the old city, where commercial and administrative life has been in full swing for more than four centuries.
The story began in 1586, when Nesvizh received Magdeburg rights. This act granted the city self-government and freed it from feudal dependence. However, as Prince Nikolai Christopher Radziwill (Sirotka) ironically remarked, "Magdeburg rights don't bring possessions…": the townspeople undertook to maintain a school and a church, as well as to build a town hall with commercial premises at their own expense. The construction, designed by architect Giovanni Bernardoni, was completed by 1596.
Initially, the shops were located on the sides of the town hall, and the entrances were oriented towards it. In the 18th century, during a large-scale restructuring, the rows turned into a U-shaped arcade surrounding the town hall on three sides. This architectural technique created an inner courtyard for unloading goods and street galleries where trade took place.
35 stone benches under a high attic have become a symbol of the city's prosperity.
The history of the ensemble is full of drama.
In 1836, a severe fire destroyed about a hundred houses, the upper tiers of the town hall tower burned down, and they were not rebuilt. It was only in the 1990s that the complex was restored based on old engravings and returned to its original appearance.
Today, the Nesvizh shopping malls are a living monument. They have not turned into a museum: shops and souvenir shops still operate inside the arcades.
The ensemble is part of the National Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve "Nesvizh" and is an object of national importance.
