Nesvizh. The Old park.

Landmark

Landmark

Nesvizh city, Old Park

Description

The Old park in Nesvizh is a living legend, hidden in the shadow of ancient oak trees and quiet alleys. Built in the 19th century on the shore of a pond, it welcomes guests not with strict lines, but with the free breath of the English landscape style.
Here, each sculpture is a whole story: a faithful dog who defended the prince, a mysterious Black Lady and a boy with a pipe from Yakub Kolas' poem. The memorial stones keep the secrets of the princely family, and the winding paths beckon deep into the centuries. It's a place where silence speaks louder than words, and the past becomes tangible.

Old Park: a walk through the ages

If you ever find yourself in Nesvizh, do not limit yourself to visiting the famous Radziwill Castle. Make sure to take the time to just wander around the Old Park. This is not just a green zone, but a real time machine, where every corner preserves the memory of the princely era, literary inspirations and even tragic pages of history.

The green necklace of the Radziwills.

The Old park is part of a huge palace and park complex spread over 100 hectares. It was founded in 1878 on the shore of a picturesque pond called Wild. Unlike the strict French gardens with their geometric layout, the spirit of the "English" landscape style reigns here: winding paths, natural hills, picturesque groups of trees and smooth coastline lines.

The best gardeners of their time were engaged in the planning of the park, and seedlings for it were brought from the nursery of the Berlin Radziwill Palace and the Khominsky Forestry. Once upon a time, the princes played tennis here, on the Sports Field, which was still an aristocratic sport, and they took sun baths in a special gazebo.

Legends brought to life in bronze and stone.

The main highlight of the Old Park is its sculptures. They not only decorate the alleys, but also tell the stories that have been forming here for centuries.

Perhaps the most touching monument is dedicated to a dog. According to legend, during the hunt, the prince's gun misfired, and a wounded bear rushed at him. The dog defended the owner at the cost of his life - and received an eternal memory in the park.

Here you can also find a sculptural composition based on the poem "Simon the Music" by Yakub Kolas - a boy with a pipe and an angel. The national poet of Belarus himself once studied at the Nesvizh Teachers' Seminary.

A special place is occupied by the Alley of Memory with busts of prominent figures associated with Nesvizh: Prince Yuri Nesvizhsky, Nikolai Christopher Radziwill "Sirotka", architect Giovanni Bernardoni, cartographer Tomasz Makowski and poet Vladislav Syrokomlya.

And on the shore of the pond you will be greeted by a mysterious mermaid figure, and nearby is the Black Lady, the heroine of the most famous Nesvizh legend about love and betrayal.

Stones that remember history.

There are several memorial stones in the Old Park. One of them was installed in honor of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the park and as a sign of gratitude to Maria Castellan, Princess Radziwill, who made great efforts to create it and restore the castle. Another stone reminds us that the seeds for the park were imported from Berlin. They say that if you make a wish and touch a stone, it will definitely come true.

A giant poplar tree, planted at the beginning of the 19th century, once grew next to the stones - the only tree on this territory at the time of the park's foundation. It reached almost 30 meters in height, but, alas, it has not survived to this day, felled by a storm.

Silence and memory.

The Old Park also has a tragic side. During the Great Patriotic War, mass shootings of civilians took place here. In October 1941, the Nazis killed about 1,500 people, mostly women, children and the elderly. Today, a monument has been erected at the site of that tragedy.

The best time to walk through the Old Park is in the warm season, when the greenery is especially bright and the water surface of the ponds reflects the sky. But even in autumn there is a special atmosphere here: golden foliage, silence, solitude. The entrance to the park is free, and you can walk here to your heart's content, looking at the sculptures, reading the inscriptions on the stones and inhaling the air that remembers princely receptions, poetic inspirations, and quiet walks of lovers.

The Old park in Nesvizh is a place where history does not lie under glass in museum windows, but lives its quiet, unhurried life. Here it is worth slowing down, listening to the rustle of leaves and trying to hear the voices of the past.
