Description

"Height 217" is the highest point of Narochansky Park, located in the vicinity of Lake Naroch. It is a high hill on the shore of Naroch, located at an altitude of 217 m above lake level. More than 100 years ago, the bloody battles of the First World War took place here. It was in this place that the offensive operation of 1916 took place, one of the most tragic pages of history. There is a version that it was this operation that "saved France" in that war. The price of this rescue is tens of thousands of dead Russian soldiers. The forgotten trenches, ruins, and field fortifications remained in our memory as mute witnesses of the past.

"Height 217" is the highest point of Narochansky Park, located in the vicinity of Lake Naroch.

A geodetic sign is installed at the height. Just a few meters from the top of hill 217, there is an information stand with a brief historical summary, reminding of the importance of this place.

The height is met by concrete fortifications peeking out of the ground. During the long 2 years of the war, both sides managed to dig kilometers of trenches here and equip numerous firing positions. The equipment is serious. More than a hundred years have passed, and you can still see traces of rifle trenches here.

Two German pillboxes have also been preserved in good condition, because the Germans, unlike the Russians, built their fortifications not from earth and wood, but from concrete. These are command and observation posts. The places for them were not chosen by chance: everything is visible in the palm of your hand. From the viewing slots inside the pillbox, you can even see the Naroch. The pillboxes are located close to each other, but at different heights. There is a tower on top of one of them. After admiring the surroundings, you can consider the first pillbox. This can only be done by bending over, as the entrance is low and not very wide. Immediately after the entrance, after the steps, there is a square pit in the concrete floor. It's pretty cramped inside. There are two narrow viewing slots, almost under the ceiling. It is unknown what kind of observation devices the pillbox was equipped with. There is also a second command and observation post nearby. At first glance, the fortifications are very similar, but there are also differences.  The second one has protection - sheets of metal covering the ceiling of the pillbox and protecting soldiers from concrete fragments as a result of shots. There is a hole in the ceiling, presumably for ventilation.

In addition to long-term fortifications, traces of trenches are visible at the "Height", approaching each of the entrances and going further.

It was one of the most fortified areas on the Eastern Front of the First World War. The German-Russian front took place in this area from October 1915 to December 1917. Both sides have equipped their firing positions seriously. To save the French from the German attack and give them time to strengthen themselves, the Russians launched a diversionary strike on the Eastern Front. This is where this strike was planned. The Germans had fortified their defenses very well and were literally firing through the chains of advancing Russian soldiers. Here, Germany also used chemical weapons - shells with toxic substances. The stubborn fighting lasted 10 days, but the offensive ended in failure for the Russians. 80,000 Russian soldiers died in these places, and the Germans were twice as many, about 40,000. But during this time, Germany's attacks on the French stopped and they were able to pull up their reserves. Duty as an ally of France Russia has fulfilled it.

In honor of the memory of ten million dead soldiers and officers during the First World War, members of the Narochansky Nabat military historical clubs of Russia and Belarus are reconstructing the battles of the First World War. Reconstructions in the format of festivals are carried out and more than 50 people of different ages participate in them. The festival is held thanks to the support of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Belarus using pyrotechnics and other modern means.
