Mogilev. The building of the Women's Diocesan College
If you visit the ancient city of Mogilev, then in addition to the historical center, it is worth walking through the suburbs and small streets near the Dubrovenka river. From the Castle Hill, the modern Gorky Park, you need to go to the Mogilev market and walk along Bykhovskaya Street uphill. In the distance, on a hill, you will see a beautiful building that looks like a palace - this is the building of the former diocesan women's college. While walking uphill to the monument, it is also worth seeing from the left and from the right several more ancient pre-revolutionary buildings, some of which also have the status of architectural monuments.
The building of the Mogilev Women's Diocesan College was built in 1889-1892 according to the project of architects P. Kamburov and M. Markov. During the Civil War, the school of Red commissars worked here. In the 1920s and 30s, there was a Belarusian pedagogical college here, where many famous Belarusian writers and poets studied. For example, the poet, publicist and translator Yurka Lyavonny (1908-1937), the poet and writer Vasily Koval (1907-1937), the poet Nalya Markova (1906 - 1994), the playwright and memoirist Vasily Gorbatsevich (1893 - 1985) and many others. The writers' organization "molodnyak" operated.
Before and after the war, the Mogilev Pedagogical College was located in the building. During the Nazi occupation, the Nazis stationed the Gestapo here. In the post-war period, a boarding school was operating. Since 1990, the building has been occupied by the regional Lyceum No. 1.
The three-storey stone building was built in the eclectic style with elements of pseudo-Russian style. In the foyer on the ground floor, there are still tiles on the floor from the 1880s with the name of the factory that produced it. The interior of some rooms retains elements of pre-revolutionary decor.
