Mogilev. The Civic Club building
On the central Pervomaiskaya Street in the city of Mogilev there is a three-storey presentable pre-revolutionary red brick building. Now the City's Cultural Center is located here. This house has a long and interesting history.
The building was built at the end of the 19th century. At first, the owner was the merchant Zeitlin, and then the commander of the 4th battalion of the Akhaltsikhe regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Tymoshchenko. A civic club was opened in the building. On the second floor, where there was a large ceremonial hall for several hundred people, meetings of various public organizations and city events were held. Lectures were given, anniversaries and holidays were celebrated. There was a women's club where Mogilev ladies sewed underwear for wounded soldiers in the Russian–Japanese war. Since 1905, a literary and musical circle gathered in the building, which included soloists and musicians of the city: Julian Dreizin, Sergei Migai and others. By 1912, the circle included about 300 people, and a choir and a symphony orchestra worked with it.
The next owner of the house was the doctor Neukh Pavlovitsky, under whom the two–storey house of merchant Khanin was purchased on the right and the 3rd floor was built on. The Venice Hotel, grocery and restaurant, shops and a workshop are open in the building. After the revolution, the "House of Labor" was opened in the building. In June 1919, Mikhail Kalinin spoke to the residents of Mogilev in the building during the Civil War. For several years, the circle of Belarusian youth "Enlightenment" worked here under the leadership of Makar Vydritsky.
During the Nazi occupation, the building housed the city council.
From 1972 to the present day, the City's Cultural Center has been located here. The famous writer and poet Konstantin Simonov performed here in 1974.
Now the building hosts many city events: meetings and concerts. There are clubs for children. And there are several cafes on the ground floor.
