Mogilev. Military Cemetery

The military cemetery, located on Lazarenko Street in the city of Mogilev, was founded in 1948 on the territory of a former military hospital. In the late 1990s, a new sculptural composition was installed at this cemetery, created by V.V.Chalenko and sculptor Yu.P.Pavlov.

More than 100 soldiers and partisans, including five Heroes of the Soviet Union, are buried in this military cemetery. In the center of the cemetery there is a bronze sculptural composition depicting two women who carefully place the body of a fallen warrior on a pedestal. Gravestones with the names of the buried are placed around this composition.

In front of the mass grave in the center of the cemetery there is a slab with a shield decorated with a wreath and a red flag. The shield bears a red star and the inscription: "Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in the struggle for freedom and independence of our Motherland in 1941-1945." The composition also includes a tombstone dedicated to all those who died underground during the war.

On the south side of the cemetery is the grave of the militia fighters who were shot on July 25, 1941. A monument made of black granite with a commemorative inscription is installed on their grave, and in front of it there is a tombstone with the names of the dead.

Soldiers of the Red Army, under the command of Sergeant Buyanov, surrounded a building on one of the streets where 150 Nazis were holed up. With well-aimed fire, they destroyed 30 fascists, and forced the rest to surrender. By a skillful flanking maneuver, Mogilev was taken in a pincer and, after a decisive assault, completely cleared of the enemy. Large trophies were captured, over 1,000 soldiers and officers were captured, including 2 German generals and 3 colonels. The 12th German Infantry Division was defeated, and its headquarters, headed by its commander, was captured.
