Mogilev. Theatre Square
In the city of Mogilev, there is a Theater Square behind the regional drama theater. It has changed its name several times in its history. First there was Muravyevsky, and it was named after the governor Count Muravyov, by whose order this square was created in the early 19th century on the site of the earthen fortifications of the ancient city.
A fountain was created in the park, benches were put up. Concerts and city celebrations were held here. Hotels, shops, profitable ladies and educational institutions were built around the square along the perimeter. On the site of today's theater there was a boulevard where the festive audience strolled. And the theater building itself was erected only in 1888 in the pseudo-Russian style.
The former Tulskaya hotel (Leninskaya, 21) has survived to our time - by the way, which is considered the first hotel in the city, and belonged to the merchant Aronzon, and then Gurevich. The Bristol Hotel, where the College of Arts is now (Komsomolskaya str., 12) and Paris (Leninskaya str., 19), owned by B. Landau. These hotels were built in the 19th century. There is a hotel "Metropol" between the square and the church, which is also located in a 19th–century building and there was once a Jewish medical and sanitary society here.
After the revolution, the square was named after the Russian writer and publicist Alexander Herzen. In the 1990s, the square was reconstructed, and also in 2023. A new fountain was made. Sculptor Andrey Vorobyov. And there is a music bench near the fountain.
