Mogilev. The memorial complex "Zemlyanka".
A bright page in the history of the city of Mogilev is the period of defense of the city during the Great Patriotic War. There are many monuments and memorials on this topic in the city.
On the very outskirts of the city, in the Kirov factory area near the Mogilev-Chausy highway, there is a memorial "Zemlyanka" (Dugout). It was here at the very beginning of the war that the headquarters of the Western Front was located for some time, just a few days.
The headquarters worked in this place from June 24 to July 3, 1941. The commanders of the front at that time were Army General Dmitry Pavlov and Lieutenant General Andrey Yeremenko. And on July 27, Marshals of the Soviet Union Boris Shaposhnikov and Kliment Voroshilov arrived by plane at the headquarters of the Western Front from Moscow for several days. Meetings and meetings were held at the headquarters with the participation of the party leadership of Soviet Belarus, including the 1st Secretary of the Central Committee of the CP(b) b Panteleimon Ponomarenko. Measures have been developed to protect the city of Mogilev and the entire Dnieper border. The defense of Mogilev was entrusted to Major General Mikhail Romanov.
The Zemlyanka Memorial was created in 1882 and consists of a mock-up of a dugout made of reinforced concrete and a commemorative plaque with an inscription. The memorial hosts city events dedicated to the memory of the fallen defenders of the Fatherland.
