The Minsk Zoo was opened on August 9, 1984 on the day of the 40th anniversary of the Minsk Automobile Plant as the MAZ Zoo Botanical Garden. In the difficult post-perestroika period, the Minsk Automobile Plant let the zoo float freely, refusing to finance it. Soon the zoo became an independent organization, acquiring the status of a state enterprise in 1997.

Despite insufficient material and technical support and the lack of stationary equipped premises, captive breeding programs for many species of animals, such as lynxes, brown bears, rhinoceroses, chinchillas, Javan macaques, collared peccaries, Nile bats, tupayas, eagle owls, steppe eagles, sultanas, etc., were successfully implemented here. Wild animals for treatment and overexposure were accepted from the population and from various organizations.

In 1998, a large-scale reconstruction of the Minsk Zoo began. A veterinary building with adjacent aviaries, a terrarium, a feed room, and a main entrance area were built. In 2008, aviaries for predators, monkeys, ungulates, and a pavilion for keeping young animals with a contact zone were put into operation. And in March 2015, the construction of the exotarium, a large complex for keeping and displaying animals from the South, was completed. America.
