Minsk. The famous "House with mermaids".

Landmark

Landmark

Minsk, Klumova str., 11

Description

At the intersection of Klumova and Stakhanovskaya streets stands a building that Minsk residents have nicknamed the "House with mermaids". Built in 1948 for the stakhanovites (production leaders), it has long been an ordinary residential building.

Everything changed in the early 2000s, when stucco molding with Neptune and mermaids appeared on the facade - it was an advertising project of the aquarium store "Vodny Mir" (Water world), which had worked here for 16 years. The decor blended so seamlessly into the architecture that it became the hallmark of the area. Today, the facade has been restored, and the sea characters have been preserved.

In 2019, the ground floor gained a new lease of life - the "Mon Nom" coffee shop opened here in a loft style with brick walls and large windows. Now it is not just a historical house, but a cozy point of attraction where the past meets the present.

The House with Mermaids in Minsk: how an aquarium store gave the city a marine legend.

There are places in Minsk that are not marked as "must-see" in guidebooks, but they create the unique look of the city. One of these is the famous "house with mermaids" on the corner of Klumova and Stakhanovskaya streets. If you are walking from Yakub Kolas Square, then it is impossible not to notice this house: its facade is decorated with bizarre marine life, as if descended from the pages of old fairy tales. But behind this beauty there is quite a pragmatic and even unexpected story.

The house was built in 1948, during the difficult post-war period, when Minsk was just recovering from the ruins. The building was built for the stakhanovites, advanced workers who received apartments for outstanding labor achievements. In those years, it was a prestigious apartment: spacious rooms, high ceilings, large windows. The architectural style is a classic Stalinist Empire style with elements of neoclassicism, typical of the buildings of the late 40s. The facade was strict, restrained, without excessive decoration - everything corresponded to the spirit of the time, when practicality and functionality were the main thing.

Later, the building changed its purpose several times. There were communal apartments, departmental premises, and ordinary housing stock. For many decades, it remained just another Stalinist house among its kind - there are dozens of them in Minsk. But everything changed in the early 2000s.

In the 2000s, the aquariums store "Vodny Mir" (Water world) was opened on the ground floor of the building. To attract the attention of passers-by, the owners decided not to limit themselves to a standard signboard, but to create a real art object. Large-scale stucco appeared on the facade: the lord of the sea element Neptune with a trident, graceful mermaids with long hair, dolphins, starfish, waves and shells. All this was done in the best traditions of decorative modeling and covered with snow-white paint, which created a contrast with the dark gray background of the walls.

This decor had nothing to do with the original architectural design. It appeared solely as an advertising ploy. However, it turned out so organically and qualitatively that the house instantly acquired a new identity. Minsk residents stopped calling it by its number or street - it became just a "House with mermaids". Interestingly, the "Vodny Mir" store itself existed here for about 16 years, but the footprint it left turned out to be much more durable than the business. When the store closed, the facade was already perceived as an integral part of the neighborhood. The city authorities and residents called for the preservation of stucco - and they were heard.

The facade has been renovated in recent years. Experts carefully restored every element: they updated the mermaids, tinted the waves, and strengthened the figure of Neptune. Today, the house looks almost the same as it did when the stucco appeared. This is a rare case when an advertising project has become part of the urban cultural environment and even a monument to private initiative.

But why is this story so important? It reminds us that the city is not just about museums and official attractions. These are also living, breathing details that appear thanks to creativity, entrepreneurship and love for their work. The House with Mermaids is an example of how a small business can change the perception of an entire neighborhood for decades to come.

In 2019, the first floor of the building found new owners, and the space began a new chapter in its biography. "Mon Nom" coffee shop has opened here, a cozy loft-style establishment. The interior retains historical brickwork, rough textures and industrial elements, but it is filled with light thanks to large panoramic windows. The space turned out to be intimate, but at the same time spacious - an ideal place to drink coffee, work on a laptop or meet friends.

The interiors of the coffee shop refer both to the industrial past of the building and to its maritime legend - in the design you can find hints of water, waves and natural textures. This makes the space a harmonious extension of the facade. Today, "Mon Nom" is a point of attraction not only for residents of the area, but also for tourists who are specifically looking for a "House with mermaids" to combine a walk with a gastronomic experience.

The House with Mermaids is an ideal example of Minsk color. Several eras converged here: the post-war Stalinist Empire, the dashing 2000s with their entrepreneurial scope and the modern culture of cozy urban spaces. A walk to this house will not take much time, but it will leave impressions for a long time. It is especially beautiful here at dusk, when the lights turn on and the stucco molding begins to cast bizarre shadows.

So if you're tired of the standard tourist routes, come to 11 Klumova Street. Order a cappuccino, look at the mermaids and think about how amazing the city is: sometimes the most ordinary advertisement becomes its main decoration and lives longer than the business that gave rise to it.
