Magic behind the scenes: Theater Puppet Museum in Minsk

In the very center of Minsk there is a place where fairy tales come to life. The Belarusian State Puppet Theater is known far beyond the borders of the country, but not everyone knows that it houses a real treasure trove - the Museum of Theatrical Dolls. This is not just a collection of exhibits, but an amazing space where history meets art, and children's joy harmoniously combines with a deep understanding of theatrical craft.

The story is in detail.

The museum was founded in 1995. The idea of creating it was not born out of thin air: by the mid-90s, a huge number of dolls had accumulated in the theater, which, having played their role on stage, were no longer used in current productions. Sending them to a warehouse or, worse, to scrap seemed like real vandalism. On the initiative of the theater's artist Alina Fomina and with the support of the management, an exposition began to form, which eventually turned into a full-fledged museum.

Since 2000, the institution has been officially named the Museum of Theatrical Dolls of the Belarusian State Puppet Theater. Today it is a landmark venue not only for young audiences, but also for professional theater workers from all over the world.

Live exhibits.

The museum's collection includes about 100 exhibits representing more than 30 performances from different years. However, the numbers cannot convey the thrill that you feel when looking into the eyes of the characters who once conquered the stage.

In the showcases you can see legendary productions that have become milestones in the history of Belarusian theatrical art.: the mystical "Master and Margarita", the poignant "Grandfather and the Crane", the epic "Simon the Music", the philosophical "King Herod" and many others.

The special value of the museum lies in the variety of doll systems presented. You can see almost all kinds of theater dolls here:

· Stick dolls controlled from below.

· Tablet (door) dolls.

· Puppets dancing on strings.

· Full-length dolls and masks.

· Semi-mechanical structures .

One of the most impressive exhibits is a huge doll from the play "The Star and the Death of Joaquin Murieta", which reached a height of 2.5 meters. As the museum staff tell with a smile, in order to place her indoors, it was necessary to literally "separate the head" from the body - the character turned out to be too big for the museum doors.

Secrets of mastery.

The museum is interesting not only as an exhibition, but also as a place of learning about theatrical cuisine. Not only the dolls themselves are kept here, but also unique materials related to the history of the theater: sketches of costumes and decorations, mock-ups of scenes, rare photographs, posters and programs. The exposition is not static - it is partially updated throughout the year, allowing for a new look at familiar productions.

Visitors can learn that dolls are made from papier-mache, silicone, fabric and fur, and it takes an average of four months to make them for one performance. And for the legendary play "The Master and Margarita", dolls were made for a whole year. Interestingly, most of the exhibits are "veterans" of the stage: the oldest puppets, for example, from the plays "The Devil's Mill" or "The Lovely Galatea", remember the audience back in the 1960s and 70s.

Atmosphere and impressions.

The museum opens its doors to the audience 45 minutes before the start of each performance, and is open during the intermission and after the end of the performance. Admission is free if you have a ticket to the performance. This means that going to the theater easily turns into a full-fledged excursion.

The senior museum supervisor is always ready to conduct a short tour for guests, revealing the secrets of creating performances and the specifics of working with dolls. For the youngest viewers, information is provided in a playful way, and adults can hear detailed stories about the 88-year-old (to date) path of the theater.

The feedback from visitors is always full of delight. The guests note that even adults who come here feel like children again. Many people advise not to limit themselves to visiting the buffet during the intermission, but to be sure to look into this amazing museum to see up close those heroes who have just performed miracles on stage.

The Theater Puppet Museum in Minsk is not just a repository of old toys. This is a living chronicle of the theater, a place where the memory of performances and their creators is carefully preserved: artists Leonid Bykov, Alina Fomina, Valery Rachkovsky and many others. This is the perfect end to a theatrical evening, allowing you to prolong the feeling of a fairy tale and understand how much work and talent is invested in every movement of the doll on stage.
