Description

In the 15th century, the first Catholic church was built in the small settlement of Medvedichi, famous for the strong faith of the locals and their sincere devotion to Catholicism.
In 1908, a new brick church of St. Nicholas was built in the village. Peter and Paul, designed by renowned architect Stefan Schiller.
The architecture of the Peter and Paul Church building is dominated by the neo-Baroque style. However, experts consider it eclectic. In general, this is the only such amazing monument with similar architecture in Belarus and its surroundings.

The most beautiful church of Saints Peter and Paul in the village of Medvedichi.

Medvedichi is an ancient place, first mentioned in the sources of the 15th century. Until 1483, it was called the "village of Medveditsa" and belonged to the Vilna biskup. In the 16th century, the village became the center of the Novogrudok municipality. At the end of the 18th century, after the annexation of the Belarusian lands to the Russian Empire, the settlement was confiscated by the Russian authorities, and then donated by Emperor Paul I to one of the generals.

One of the oldest churches in Belarus with a unique history was located here. Since the end of the 14th century, a policy of strengthening Catholicism has been pursued, and churches have been built on Belarusian soil, and the Catholicization of the local population has been purposefully carried out.

The Catholic parish in Medvedichi was formed back in 1483, when a wooden church was built on the site of today's stone one.

A little later, in 1545, a wooden church was built again. Presumably, 85 years later, the church was destroyed by the fire of the Tatars. In 1645, another wooden Catholic church was built.

A huge number of interesting historical documents were found in the archives of the church. For example, one of them describes in detail the property and appearance of the church in 1782.

In 1886, as a result of the repression of the authorities of the Russian Empire against Catholics, the church was closed. For 20 years, Catholics have been trying to return the shrine to me, demanding that it be opened, and they have achieved their goal. However, the church was in poor condition, so the faithful had to raise funds for the construction of a new stone church.

In 1908, a new church building was built according to the design of the Polish architect Stefan Schiller, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences.

Surprisingly, the church remained unscathed during both the first and Second World Wars.During the reign of the Soviet government, it did not close, remaining operational.

Today, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in the village of Medvedichi is not only a religious site, but also an important part of the cultural heritage of Belarus. Its history and architecture make it a significant place to explore and visit.

The temple is located about 35 km from the town of Baranovichi and 50 km from Nesvizh.
