Gomel region, Gomel district, village Markovichi
Description
No one remembers exactly when and by what miracle the Varvarinskaya krinitsa was revealed, but the locals have known the healing properties of its water for a long time. Once upon a time, several springs gushed from the ground. However, only one of them, known as the Varvarinskaya krinitsa, has survived to this day. People came and went for healing water not only from the surrounding villages, but also from Gomel, and even from Chernigov. It is believed that water from a local spring washes away ailments and heals the soul.

Markovichi. Varvarinskaya krinitsa (spring).
There is a legend that a certain nun of one of the Chernigov monasteries had a dream that it was necessary to find a spring with healing water in this place. And when she came to this place, there really was a spring. They also say that a woman from the Ural came hoping to be cured of a foot disease: she saw in a dream that she would cure her illness if she drank water from this spring. She came here with great hope, and the healing water helped her.
Krinitsa has an interesting story: it has already changed its place twice. At first, it was the fault of people – when the road was paved, the spring disappeared. When believers from Chernigov came to get water, they did not find the spring. There was a nun among them, and following her example, everyone began to offer prayers to God. And soon they noticed how a few meters away a spring was hammering.… A few years later, it changed its place again, but this time of its own.
The spring was consecrated in June 2020. There is a cross with an icon of the Great Martyr Varvara next to the spring. A votive towel is tied on this cross when they ask the Great Martyr Varvara to help in trouble, to get rid of the disease. Previously, coins were thrown into the spring for this purpose.
Every year, on the third day after Trinity, the rector of the Catherine Church in Gadichevo comes to Varvarinskaya krinitsa: he serves a prayer service and consecrates the water. Previously, after such a service, everyone had a meal at a common "table" made of spread tablecloths.
Believers and monks make pilgrimages to the spring. Now the nuns of one of the monasteries often come here to pray and collect holy water.
Several years ago, the Varvarinskaya krinitsa was improved: the territory was put in order, a new fence was put up, a gazebo was equipped, and a roof house was installed over the spring. Volunteers from the surrounding villages, students of Markovichi secondary School under the guidance of the rector of the church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr, as well as employees of the Grabovka forestry took part in this good deed.
Varvarinskaya Krinitsa is still revered and cherished by the people for the healing properties of the water: on June 23, Orthodox believers will celebrate Holy Trinity Day, and on the 25th, Varvarinskaya Krinitsa will be crowded again.
