The Silent Guardians of Polesie: the burial mound at Malkovichi
The village of Malkovichi is located in the Gantsevichi district of the Brest region, among the hilly ridges of the Polesie lowland. However, the main value for history is not its modern buildings, but the ancient necropolis, located about a kilometer from the outskirts of the village. In the tract with the telling name of Gryada (the Ridge), the silent witnesses of the Middle Ages rise - the burial mound of the X–XIII centuries.
Today, this archaeological site is a group of five earthen mounds. From the outside, they may seem like just the irregularities of the landscape, but behind these shapes lies the history of an entire tribe. Scientists associate the appearance of the burial ground with the Dregovichi, one of the largest East Slavic tribal unions that inhabited the marshy lands between Pripyat and the Western Dvina.
Unlike many other graves in Polesie, there are no characteristic wooden log cabins or crosses. This silent cemetery preserves traces of pagan, and possibly transitional, rituals to Christianity.
Riddles of stone slabs.
The special atmosphere of this place is given not so much by the mounds themselves as by the stone slabs scattered among the mounds. Some researchers suggest that in ancient times they could have served as pagan altars.
Time has left its secret messages on the surface of these boulders. Old letters and mysterious signs appear on the ancient stones. Deciphering these petroglyphs is a matter of the future. Perhaps these are traces of ancient writing, magical amulet symbols, or simply marks marking the boundaries of burials.
Information uncertainty.
It is interesting that the official registers of cultural heritage monuments often mention the "Burial mound" in the village of Melkovichi (entry No. 5300000592). This may indicate discrepancies in geographical names (Malkovichi/Melkovichi), characteristic of archival documents, or the existence of another, as yet little-studied object nearby.
Instead of a conclusion.
The Malkovichi burial mound is not just an archaeological site. This is the point of contact with the epoch of the formation of Ancient Rus in the Polesie lands. Standing on the Ridge, where the wind stirs the grass over the graves of people who lived a thousand years ago, you can't help but feel the breath of hoary antiquity.
For those who dare to visit this place, it will become not just a stop on the route, but an encounter with a story that has yet to be truly read - through stones, signs and silent mounds.
