Lida. Cathedral in honor of the Archangel Michael

The first monastery and church of the Piars was built in Lida in 1757-1758 at the expense of Ignatius Scipio del Campo. The Piars opened an educational institution, the collegium, where 8 Piar Chaplains worked.

There is a Cathedral in the center of Lida, which was consecrated in honor of St. Michael the Archangel. Originally, this building belonged to the Catholic Church and was called the Church of St. Joseph.

The temple was built in 1797-1825 in the classical style. Emperor Pavel I donated 5,000 rubles to the construction. The church belonged to the Catholic Order of Piars and besides the church there was also a monastery. The monastery was closed in 1832 after the suppression of the anti-Russian uprising. In 1842, a fire broke out in the church. In 1863, the church passed to the Orthodox believers and was consecrated in honor of Michael the Archangel.

In Soviet times, the building was equipped with a planetarium.

In the plan, the building is a rotunda temple, which is covered with a hemispherical dome. There is an octagonal lantern on the dome. A porch with a portico with 4 columns is attached to the prayer hall, which is round in plan. The Doric order is used in the decoration of the temple. The portico and the risalites are completed with triangular pediments. There are eight pairs of Doric columns in the interior around the perimeter of the prayer hall. The dome has colored murals.

Near the building there is a stone one-storey monastery and a bell tower.
