St. George's Church in Leshnya is a significant monument of wooden architecture of the neo-Russian style.
The wooden structure of the church of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious is very similar to a building with stone architecture.
The architectural composition of the temple has a longitudinal-axial cross shape and consists of five consecutive log cabins. It includes a vestibule, a square prayer hall with side chapels and a pentagonal apse, which gives the building a monumental appearance.
Divine services were held in the church until 1927. In 1927, the church was closed. For a long period, the temple building was owned by the collective farm and was used as a warehouse.
In September 1998, the parish community was registered, and in 1999 the church building was returned to the parish.
The restoration of the church was carried out thanks to the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Horst Winkelmann.
In September 2001, the church was consecrated and opened. The miraculously preserved ancient icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Great Martyr George the Victorious, and St. Seraphim of Sarov, which had previously been removed from the temple and stored in the basement of the district party committee, were returned to the temple.
Today, the Church of St. George the Victorious is recognized as a historical and cultural value of category 3, which underlines its importance for the cultural heritage of the region and the country as a whole.
