Description

The monument to Tsmok (Dragon) in Lepel is a unique and symbolic object that has become an important part of the cultural heritage of the city. The tsmok, or dragon, is a character from the mythology of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and occupies a significant place in Belarusian folklore. Local local historian Vladimir Shushkevich made every effort to perpetuate the brand of the region – Tsmok Lepelsky and create a sculpture made of bronze. Today, the two-meter-high "Lepel Tsmok" is the main symbol of the city, a nationally known monument to the dragon, which, according to legend, lives in a Lepel lake.

The main symbol of the city of Lepel. The monument to the dragon, famous throughout the country, is said to live in Lake Lepel.

The monument to Tsmok was erected on the shore of Lake Lepel in the city park in September 2013. It has become a symbol of local culture and traditions. It was also created as part of a project to improve the city and attract tourists. The Cmoc embodies strength, wisdom and protection, which makes it an important element of the urban identity.

Lepel began to be considered the birthplace of the Tsmok thanks to Vladimir Korotkevich's historical novel "Hrystos pryzyamliusya u Garodni" ("Christ landed in Grodno"), which describes in detail the appearance of the monster and tells how in the Middle Ages about 40 dragons (tsmoks) died in Lake Lepel in one night. The lines from this book are located today at the feet of the Lepelsky Central Committee.

The bronze monument conveys a realistic image of a dragon, which, according to legends, protects local lands. Its size and details make it noticeable and attractive to tourists and locals alike.

The Tsmok monument has become not only a tourist attraction, but also a venue for various cultural events. It attracts the attention of both locals and visitors.

The festival "Visiting the Lepel Central Committee" was also invented in Lepel. It has been held here annually since 2016.
