Lasha. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
An Orthodox wooden church of St. Nicholas has been built in the center of the village of Lasha in the Grodno region. For the first time, the place has been known since the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since the 16th century.
The church was built in 1863 during the time of the Russian Empire. The parish included 14 nearby villages: Kovalichi, Zhukevichi, Bobrovniki, Balichi, Litvinki, Pogorany and others. The parish consisted of 1,746 men and 1,662 women, and a total of 3,408 people. The church had an Orthodox brotherhood, a parish trusteeship, a public school for 99 students, and seven parish schools. Three priests served at the temple: the rector and two psalmists. There were 78 tithes of Church land.
A rubble stone fence has been erected around the church. And next to it there is a stone bell-tower gate.
The original plan for the construction of the church, which was developed by the district engineer Stankevich in 1853, provided for the construction of a building in the classical style with a portico and columns. However, the project was redesigned in a retrospective Russian style.
The building was built in the traditions of folk wooden architecture, and consists of two main architectural parts: a vestibule and a prayer hall.
The interior has three naves. There are balustraded choirs above the entrance. There is a miraculous icon of St. Nicholas in the church.
The outstanding Belarusian, Polish and Russian scholar of philology, academician Yefim Karsky (1860-1931), was born in the village of Lasha.
