Description

In the Smorgon district, you can see the remains of an old bridge (ruins) from the First World War. Five-meter monolithic blocks stand in silence, which is sometimes broken only by ducks nesting along the shores. Ruins of a railway bridge from the time of the First World War.

The bridge in this area was built after 1915, when the front line stabilized and both sides needed to arrange supplies for the troops.

According to one version, the Germans used a narrow–gauge railway on the bridge to transport ammunition, according to another - to transport timber.

For a track with a width of only 60 cm, the standard of the German railways, the structure seems disproportionately massive. And if you imagine a wooden superstructure above concrete pillars, about the same height, then the bridge looks gigantic. However, it is worth considering the high pressure on the track, which led to such a monumental structure.

According to the wear of the supports, it is clear that the water level in the Villa was about a meter higher. Powerful ice cutters were provided to protect against the spring flood.

The bridge served the occupation forces for no more than two years, was destroyed and has not been rebuilt since.

Seven of the eight pillars have survived to this day, five of which rise above the water, one has grown into the shore, and one fell around 2012.

The central part is missing, it was probably blown up to clear the riverbed, as it was no longer in the archive photos of 1935. The roots of the trees are currently being destroyed.

In 2019, the Belarusian thriller "The Forbidden Zone" was filmed here.

Not far from the bridge, closer to the village of Mel, you can find the ruins of a concrete fortification ferry crossing of the same time, but they are less interesting. Also next to the bridge, 18 km away, there are fortifications from the First World War with bas-reliefs with images of animals.
