The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Koshevichi is a monument of wooden architecture, built in 1642.
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Koshevichi is an outstanding monument of wooden architecture, built in 1642. It consists of three main volumes: the refectory, the middle part and the apse and is distinguished by a peculiar system of proportions associated with ancient Russian architecture. The uniqueness of the church lies not only in its age, but also in the fact that local craftsmen built it without using a single nail. This modest village church is a striking example of the architecture of ancient wooden architecture.
In 1862, almost two centuries after its construction, a belfry was added to the main log cabin, which added an additional architectural element to this historical monument.
Locals are sure that the temple, which has survived the trials of time and survived the era of destruction and wars, became such thanks to centuries-old prayer at this place. Even during the Great Patriotic War, when the village was burned down by the German invaders, the church remained intact. She gives parishioners spiritual strength, comfort and hope. The story of how peasants sent three women to Kiev to get the shroud so that a holy relic could appear in their church has been passed down from generation to generation. They set off on foot, and only three years later returned with the shroud.
Today, among the ancient icons made on wood, there is a unique icon of the Seven Holy Martyrs Makoveyev, to which parents pray for their children.
The number of pilgrims from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine visiting the Assumption Church for prayer and spiritual renewal is constantly growing. In order to preserve the temple as a monument of wooden architecture, in the 1960s its walls were lined with clapboard, and the foundation was strengthened.
The Assumption Church is now a monument of national significance. An amazing hollow in an old oak tree, resembling the silhouette of the Mother of God, also attracts the attention of pilgrims.
This temple is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of Belarus as a legacy of the 19th century, however, according to the materials of the Turov diocese and the testimonies of local residents, its dating dates back to the 17th century.
