Description

Be sure to visit this picturesque place in the village of Kopys, Vitebsk region. Here you can enjoy the magical nature of these places. There is a belief that in the fog you can see the outlines of an ancient castle. As soon as the fog clears, a view opens onto Petrovsky Val, which has survived to this day.

Indeed, there was once a castle in Kopys, as evidenced by documents from 1726. However, all the structures, including the gates, wooden wall and bastions, eventually fell into disrepair.

Today, only an earthen rampart with wooden remains, known as Petrovsky Val, has survived to this day. He was given this name due to the fact that Peter I once lived near this territory, who left his signature on one of the beams. Despite the loss of the castle and the emperor's house, we still have a magnificent natural heritage that attracts tourists who can enjoy walks, fresh air and relaxing on benches.

Petrovsky Val Castle is a picturesque historical place in the village of Kopys.

Since the 11th century, on the high bank of the Dnieper River in Kopys, there was a border fortress, which first belonged to the Polotsk land, and then to the Smolensk land. Later, the wooden Kopys castle, owned by the Radziwill princes, was built on the site of the old Detinets.

The preserved plan of Kopys in 1665, located in Krakow, demonstrates all the fortifications of the castle and city parts. A small quadrangular defensive complex is clearly visible, surrounded by an earthen rampart and a prison, as well as a water moat with a pond on which the mill was located. The castle was connected to the city's commercial area by a bridge and a gate. In medieval cities with a certain status, in addition to castles, fortifications were also built to protect the central part.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. During the Northern War with Sweden (1700-1721), Peter the Great organized construction work here for defense, and during his retreat he burned the Kopys and seized weapons from the arsenal. Later, the castle was restored again. According to the inventories of 1726-1773, the fortress had wooden walls, four bastions and an entrance tower with double gates. The second floor was occupied by a hall with four windows, around which there was a gallery. Firearms were stored in the hall, which were also used for religious purposes. The tower was decorated with a weather vane in the shape of an eagle. Since 1772, the castle has not been restored and it has fallen into disrepair.

At the moment, only Petrovsky Val and the city posad have been preserved. The rampart is an earthen embankment with an ancient fortified settlement of the XI–XVIII centuries, having an arc-shaped shape with a total length of 370 meters and a height of 5 meters. A wooden reconstruction of several towers has recently been carried out on the shaft in accordance with the documents of 1665.

Currently, celebrations, historical reenactments and mass events are held here.

Petrovsky Val, which reaches a height of 5 meters, is especially beautiful in spring and summer, when it is covered with greenery. Here you can spend time with a picnic or active outdoor games. It is a pity that the castle has not been preserved, but the nature in Kopisi is still magnificent...
