Kopyl. Castle Hill.
The city of Kopyl is a small regional center located on several hills. There is a Castle Hill in the historical center of the city, which has the status of an archaeological monument. It is very easy to get to the monument, as there are several roads near it. There is a Martin Turovsky spring near the mountain itself, where you can get water.
Castle Hill is located next to the Mazhao River and the mountain offers a beautiful landscape. Kopyl Castle existed during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 14th and 18th centuries and towers 13 meters above the river. The castle was made of wood. It was built in the 14th century on the site of an ancient city.
In the 16th century, the castle was considered one of the most significant in the state and is referred to in documents as "the most important princely castles with a city." On the territory of the castle was the residence of the local princely family of the Olelkovichs, and then the Radziwills.
The castle occupied an oval-shaped area of 100 by 45 meters. Earthen ramparts made of clay and sand are three meters high. During the archaeological excavations, the burnt wooden fortifications of the castle were found. Around the castle there was a defensive moat with water 3 meters deep and 20 meters wide.
Ancient Catholic cemeteries have been preserved on the neighboring mountain next to Castle Hill.
