Description

Kopyl is the birthplace of the first leader of Soviet Belarus, Tishka Gartny. His real name is Dmitry Fedorovich Zhilunovich (1887-1937). The house of the politician and writer at 39 Zhilunovich Street has been preserved in the city. A granite monument has been erected near the regional museum of local lore.

T. Gartny is a public and political figure, writer and poet, translator. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. He was born in Kopyl in a peasant family. The building of the tannery where Tishka Gartny worked has been preserved in Kopyl, and the museum of local lore is now located in this building.

Tishka Gartny was Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Belarus from January 1 to February 3, 1919. The author of the manifesto on the creation of the SSRB.
The bronze monument near the museum was erected in 2021, when the Day of Belarusian Writing was celebrated in Kopyl.

Kopyl. Monument to Tishka Gartny.

The first leader of Soviet Belarus, Tishka Gartny, or Dmitry Fedorovich Zhilunovich, was born in the city of Kopyl. The wooden house of the politician and writer at 39 Zhilunovich Street has been preserved. A granite monument has been erected near the regional Museum of Local Lore.


      Tishka Gartny (1887-1937) was a public and political figure, writer and poet, translator. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. He was born in Kopyl in a peasant family. He worked as a craftsman in Kopyl, Belarus, Lithuania and Ukraine. The building of the 19th-century tannery, where T. Gartny worked, has been preserved in Kopyl. The local history museum is now located in this building.


         He worked in factories in St. Petersburg and took part in public life. In 1918, he was the editor of the first Bolshevik newspaper, the Dennitsa. From January 1 to February 3, 1919, he was Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Belarus. The author of the manifesto on the creation of the SSRB.


      The announcement of the SSRB took place in the city of Smolensk, where a memorial plaque was installed on the building of the regional Philharmonic: "On December 30-31, 1918, the first congress of the Communist Party of Bolsheviks of Belarus was held in this building, which announced the formation of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic."


        Gartny then worked in newspapers, publishing houses, archives, and as a political officer in the Red Army. He works in the People's Commissariat of Education and Inbelkult. He was engaged in publishing Belarusian textbooks and art books.   


         In 1931, he was expelled from the Communist Party. He was arrested in 1936. He was transferred to a psychiatric hospital in Mogilev, where he died in April 1937. According to other sources, he committed suicide. Rehabilitated.
