The building of the former prison in Kobrin is a witness to a tragic story. Built in 1821 and originally intended for the detention of criminal offenders, this prison has become a place of detention for innocent people.
Among the famous prisoners was Napoleon Orda, a talented Belarusian artist, composer and musician, who was arrested for participating in illegal student organizations and as a suspect in the Kastus Kalinovsky uprising. During his imprisonment, he created several sketches.
In addition, participants in the 1863 uprising, striking railroad workers and workers of the early 20th century, as well as members of the Communist Party of Western Belarus in the 1920s and 30s were held here.
During the Great Patriotic War, the prison became a symbol of the suffering of the victims of fascism. Civilians, underground fighters and partisans were kept here. In 1944, during the retreat, the Nazis brutally shot all the prisoners in the prison.
In memory of the victims of the tragedy, to the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Kobrin region, a monument was erected on the territory of the former prison.
Today, this building recalls the tragic pages of history and is a reminder of the importance of preserving peace and preventing the recurrence of such atrocities.
