Description

Those passing by the village of Knyazhitsy in the Mogilev district will immediately notice the main attraction of these places, which has come down to us through the centuries - the Church of St. Anthony. Despite the fact that this remarkable monument of Baroque architecture has not been used for a long time and is in a dilapidated state, it retains its former grandeur. The towers of the huge structure rise above the village houses and are clearly visible against the backdrop of rural landscapes, its main facade looks especially impressive.

Initially, on the site of this stone church there was a Dominican monastery founded in the 17th century. A little later, the first wooden church was built, which did not last long. In the middle of the 18th century, thanks to donations from the Krukovsky noblemen, the construction of a new monumental temple began, the ruins of which can be seen today.

Knyazhitsy. Church of St. Anthony.

In 1681, the then owner of Knyazhitsy, the court ensign Konstantin Vladislav Pats, allocated funds for the construction of a Dominican monastery in Knyazhitsy. At first, a small wooden church was built. In 1750, the construction of a majestic stone church began in its place, thanks to donations from the descendants of Konstantin Pats, as well as the Krukovsky nobles. In 1780, the construction was completed, and the church was consecrated in honor of St. Anthony of Padua.

After the Kastus Kalinowski rebellion, in 1863 the church was closed for six years, after which it suffered the fate of many Catholic churches - it was converted into an Orthodox church (Alexander Nevsky). The appearance of the building did not change much, only three domes appeared. The church functioned intermittently until 1965. From that moment until today the temple has been abandoned.

Despite the emergency condition of this outstanding monument of Belarusian sacred architecture, the scale of the building is truly astounding. The temple impresses with its scale and monumentality, one can feel the former grandeur of the once beautiful church. The ceiling height here reaches 15 meters, but due to the absence of central columns, the structure looks light and airy. The stucco and frescoes that decorated the building have now been almost completely lost, and their condition is only getting worse every year. The church is in a dilapidated state, and it is unsafe to inspect it from close proximity.

The church building is a historical and cultural value of Belarus, second category.
